ಕುಂಚ-ಪ್ರಪಂಚ: December 2008

'ಘಟಶ್ರಾದ್ಧ'... ಅನಂತಮೂರ್ತಿಯವರ ನೀಳ್ಗತೆಯನ್ನಾಧರಿಸಿ, ಕಾಸರವಳ್ಳಿಯವರು ತಮ್ಮದೇ ಶೈಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಿಸಿದ ಮೊದಲ ಸಿನಿಮಾ. ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಹಾಗೂ ಸಿನೆಮಾ ಇವೆರಡರದ್ದು ಹತ್ತಿರದ ನಂಟು. ಭಾವನೆಗಳನ್ನ ತಮ್ಮದೇ ಆದ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರೂಪಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಪುಟಗಟ್ಟಲೆ ಇದ್ದ ಕಥೆಯೊಂದು ಬೆಳ್ಳಿ ಪರದೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಮುದುಡಿ ಮೂಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಆ ಭಾವನೆಯ ಬಣ್ಣಗಳನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಪರದೆಯಿಂದ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಕ್ಯಾನ್ವಾಸ್ ಮೇಲೆ ಮೂಡಿಸುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಕಾಸರವಳ್ಳಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಅನಂತ ಮೂರ್ತಿಯವರ ಅನನ್ಯ ಸೃಜನಶೀಲ ಕೃತಿಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ.ಕಾಂ ಹಾಗೂ ಸಂವಾದ.ಕಾಂ ಪರವಾಗಿ ಗೌರವ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುವ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಾಮಾಣಿಕ ಯತ್ನ. ಇಂತಹದೊಂದು ವಿಭಿನ್ನ ಪ್ರಯೋಗವು ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಲು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭದ ಹಂತದಿಂದಲೂ ಸಹಕರಿಸಿದವರು ಸಂವಾದದ ಸಾರಥಿ ಶೇಖರ್ ಪೂರ್ಣ. ಅವರಿಗೆ ನನ್ನ ಹೃತ್ಪೂರ್ವಕ ಧನ್ಯವಾದಗಳು.
ಕತೆಯಲ್ಲಿನ ಗಂಭೀರತೆ, ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ನಾಟುವ ತಿಳಿಯಾದ ನಿರೂಪಣೆ, ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಅಡಗಿದ ಒಳಾರ್ಥ ಎಷ್ಟರ ಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹುದುಗಿದೆಯೊ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಸಿನಿಮಾ ನೋಡಲು ಅವಕಾಶ ಸಿಗದವರಿಗೊಂದು ಚಿತ್ರದ ಮೂಲಕ ಸಂವೇದನೆ.

Ghatashraddha (The Ritual) was Girish Kasaravalli's first film as a director. The Film was based on a novel by eminent Kannada writer U R Ananthamurthy. It won the 1978 National Film Award for Best Film and in 2002 became the only India film at the Film Archive of Paris, selected for the Cinema hundredth anniversary celebrations, amongst one of the best 100 in the world.
Literature and cinema are very closely related. Depiction of emotions has its own way in both of them.Here I've tried to unveil those emotions on a canvas. We thought this is the best way to respect and cherish the incredible work of Girish Kasaravalli and U R Ananthamurthy. This couldn't have been possible without our samvaada saarathi Shekhar Poorna. I'm grateful to Shekhar Poorna for his endless encouragement and cooperation.
It's difficult to paint what a character goes through in a film. Still it's my sincere effort to bring all emotional colors of Ghatashraddha from big screen to a small canvas.
